Program Notes:

“The Ash Grove” is a traditional Welsh melody, first published in 1802 in a book called The Bardic Museum. It appeared a few years later with words under the name “Llwyn Onn.” The tune may be much older. Beethoven arranged an early version of the song that had appeared earlier in John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera from 1728. The tune eventually became associated with religious words in 1871 under the title, “The Master Hath Come” by Sarah Doudney.
