Composer: Andrew Barrington
Program Notes:
Variations on “We Shall Win” is based on the Salvation Army song set to a tune by Joseph Philbrick Webster, whose refrain boldly declares, “I believe we shall win, if we fight in the strength of the King.” Drawing on the song’s vivid imagery of spiritual conflict, the work develops the melody through contrasting variations that portray struggle, courage, discipline, and triumph. Echoing the text’s themes of wielding “the sword of the Spirit,” fighting in the King’s name, and advancing Christ’s cause, the music moves from tension and contest toward confidence and victory.
The composition is rooted in the scriptural assurance of Romans 8:37, “In all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us,” a verse that stands at the heart of the song’s message. Each variation presents a distinct expression of perseverance and resolve, while affirming that victory comes not through human strength, but in the strength of the King. In this setting, the familiar melody becomes a proclamation of Christ’s certain victory.
