Program Notes:

The tune “Monks Gate” was originally a Sussex folk melody and was transcribed in 1904 by Ralph Vaughan Williams from the singing of a woman who lived in Monks Gate, Sussex, England. As a hymn, it is most often associated with the words “He who would valiant be ‘gainst all disaster” by John Bunyan, the author of Pilgrim’s Progress.
