Bishop Ken (an upright and devout English cleric of the 17th century) wrote these words to be sung y the scholars resident in Winchester College and it is said that several copies were written on large sheets and hung on the walls of the dormitories, where the boys could see them first thing I the morning and last thing at night.  At publication, he appended the following note: “Be sure to sing the morning and evening hymn in your chamber devoutly, remembering that the Psalmist assures you that it is good thing to tell of the loving kindness of the Lord early in the morning and of His truth in the night season.”  The last verse of the hymn, now known as the Doxology, has become one of the most sung verses in the Christian Church.
