Program Notes:
This beautiful carol dates to the sixteenth century and is named for the city of Coventry, England, where it was sung as a part of a play depicting the Christmas story. The carol depicts the massacre of the innocents, where King Herod ordered all male children under the age of two to be killed. The mournful nature of the music is evident, yet the shape of the melody retains a winsome quality.
