Eternal Father Strong To Save
Grade Level 1
Year: 2001
Type: Festival Prelude
Composer: James Curnow
Program Notes:
William Whiting (1825-1878) must have been inspired by Psalm 107, where it says, “He guided the to their desired haven; let htme give thanks to the Lord,” when he penned the profound text for this beloved hymn:
Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bids the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
O hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea.
In combining this inspiring text with the powerful melody “Melita”, by John Bacchus Dykes *1823-1876), this great hymn has become a source of strength and encouragement for the families of mariners lost at sea for many generations. This setting is presented in a fanfare prelude style, which strives to capture the power and glory of this magnificent text. Though only a one-verse arrangement is included, the repeat ending allows the inclusion of all four verses.
