Created as a text painting of the hymn by William Whiting (text: 1825-1878) and John B. Dykes (tune 1823-1876), this fanfare and prelude probes the meaning and depth of what has become known today as the Navy Hymn. Beginning with a distant call to arms (fanfare) and tribute to the fallen, the music gradually evolves into the first verse….a quiet yet intense meditation.
When the fanfare returns minutes later, it is employed as a heroic tribute to “the greatest generation” as it fought to keep our country free. The fourth verse is treated here in a robust and thought provoking prelude, interspersed with references to the fanfare. The majestic ending magnifies the final lines of verse four:
And to your glory let there be, glad hymns of praise from land and sea.
