Program Notes:

“Let Us With a Gladsome Mind,” a majestic hymn based on Psalm 136, is sung congregationally to the tune, “Monkland.”  The melody was written in the 19th century by John Antes (1740-1311), to text of John Milton (1608-1674).  A fanfare-like introduction precedes the well-known tune which is then presented fully and developed in melodic fragments.  Following a transition, a final verse completes this setting with the concluding words, “For His mercies shall endure, ever faithful, ever sure.”
