Fanfare Prelude On " Deep Harmony "
Grade Level 1
Year: 2023
Composer: James Curnow
Program Notes:
Throughout his life, Count Zinzendorf (1700-1760) focused not on what he was doing for Christ but on the sufficiency of what Christ had done for him. His song “Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness” (Translated by John Wesley,1703-1791) is an outstanding example of this.
Jesus, Thy blood and righteousness
My beauty are, my glorious dress;
‘Midst flaming worlds, in these arrayed
With joy shall I lift up my head.
Lord, I believe were sinners more
Than sands upon the ocean shore,
Thou hast for all a ransom paid,
For all a full atonement made.
No tunes were included with his poetry, so the original setting or settings for this hymn are uncertain. The Salvation Army Song Book no longer includes this text, though the band tune books still contain the traditional, beautiful tune, “Deep Harmony,” most often associated with this text.
