Program Notes:
Daniel C. Roberts, a clergyman of the Protestant Episcopal Church, wrote this hymn in 1876 for the United States’ centennial Fourth of July celebration. While paying homage to America’s greatness, the author’s central theme is the acknowledgement of God as Creator of the universe and as the One who has led this nation. This is a festive setting of a majestic, noble theme, also known as “National Hymn.”
