He Walks With God
Grade Level 1
Year: 2017
Composer: William Himes
Program Notes:
First published anonymously in 1832, “He Walks With God” was eventually credited to Dorothy Ann Thrupp (1779-1847) and appears in The Song Book of The Salvation Army to this day. It serves as a reminder to constantly focus on God’s presence in our lives, as expressed in the first verse:
He walks with God who speaks to God in prayer,
And daily brings to him his daily care;
Possessing inward peace, he truly knows
A heart’s refreshment and a soul’s repose.
The tune, “Ellers,” is frequently associated with this text. It was composed by John Edward Hopkins (1818-1901), a prominent English organist and one of the founders of the Royal College of Organists.
