The teaching by Jesus on the fear of God in the twelfth chapter of Luke provides the inspiration for this popular song: “Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins? And not one of them is forgotten before God.” (Luke 12:6). The well-known gospel song composer Charles H. Gabriel set Civilla D. Martin’s text to produce a song that provides a wonderful response to this verse from God’s word:
Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely and long for heaven and home,
When Jesus is my portion? My constant friend is He,
His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.
