Beethoven’s (1770 - 1827) great melody is the choral theme from his Ninth Symphony with the text “Ode to Joy.” Henry van Dyke (1852 - 1933) wrote the words for the hymn, “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee”, that are associated with this great tune. The excerpt has been adopted as a Hymn for Europe.
