The optimistic spirit of this well-known gospel song was a decided influence in this setting’s upbeat treatment. The song writer, C. Austin Miles 91868-1946), was actually a pharmacist who worked in this profession for many years before submitting his first gospel song, “List, “Tis Jesus’ Voice” to the Hall-Mack Publishing Company. The publisher encouraged him to write others and in 1898 he went to work full-time with Hall-Mack (later merged into Rodeheaver) where he served for 37 years as editor and manager.
