Although George F. Root (1820-1895) is remembered mainly for his Civil War songs, he was also interested in church music from the time he was a boy soprano in a Boston church choir. One of his favorite hymnists, Chicago preacher C. H. Woolston, set the words “Jesus Loves the Little Children” to Roots’ tune, “Tramp! Tramp! Tramp!” the song has survived today as a popular Sunday School chorus.
