Program Notes:

This is one of the oldest carols, dating back to a Latin hymn of the 12th century.  The words we use today were translated into English by John M. Neale in the 19th century.  Thus, this carol links us with Christians worshiping at Christmas for over 800 years.  Our preparation for the celebration of the birth of Christ begins four Sundays before Christmas day and is a period we call Advent, which centers on the Old Testament prophecies concerning the coming of a Messiah and His establishment of an earthly kingdom.

In the medieval church of the 12th century, the hymn was used in the liturgy as a series of antiphons – short musical statements sung for the week of Vesper services just before Christmas Eve.  Each of these antiphons greets the anticipated Messiah with one of the titles ascribed to Him in the Old Testament.
