The text of this popular Christmas carol was written in 1868 by Phillips Brooks, an Episcopal priest from Boston. He wrote the poem after an inspiring visit to the village of Bethlehem, in Jerusalem, three years earlier. The tune used here is known as "St. Louis," but in the introductory and closing measures the arranger has referenced the English hymn tune "Forest Green" which is also associated with this text throughout Europe.
