One Day Eb/F Solo
Grade Level 1
Year: 2009
Type: Eb/F Solo
Composer: Robert Snelson
Program Notes:
J. Wilbur Chapman (1859-1918) was an American evangelist who traveled the world preaching the gospel. His song, “One Day” gives a concise outline of the life of Christ, progressing from Jesus’ birth to his death on the cross, resurrection, and eventual return. Music was added by Charles H. Marsh (1886-1956) to create this hymn which has been used in the church for 100 years, especially at Easter.
Chapman captured the essence of the gospel story, in these four lines:
Living, He loved me; dying, He saved me;
Buried, He carried my sins far away;
Rising, He justified freely forever;
One day He’s coming—O glorious day!
The first-person perspective of the text translates well into a solo, as the soloist presents a testimony in music.
