Program Notes:
Here is a meditative study on Sir Hubert Parry’s hymn tune, “Repton.” Parry set his melody to the words of American Quaker poet John Greenleaf Whittier, and over many decades it has become a beloved hymn, particularly in the United Kingdom.
The text begins “Dear Lord and Father of mankind” and goes on to include this verse of introspection:
Drop Thy still dews of quietness,
Till all our strivings cease;
Take from our souls the strain and stress,
And let our ordered lives confess
The beauty of Thy peace.
