Prelude St Agnes (Jesus The Very Thought Of Thee)
Grade Level 1
Year: 2007
Type: Hymn/Song Arrangement
Composer: James Curnow
Program Notes:
Presented here, in the form of a prelude (an introduction before a drama or worship service), is the beautiful hymn tune St. Agnes (John B. Dykes 1823-1876). This tune is most often associated with the text “Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee,” attributed to Bernard of Clairvaux (1019-1153). The setting draws on the strong musical lines of the tune for its reoccurring rise and fall and features many imitative passages that highlight the inspiring text. The opening phrase, which returns continually throughout the piece, is an original melody based on the tune St. Agnes and serves to give motion and expression to the prelude.
