Program Notes:

A Te Deum is a short religious service held to give thanks. The name comes from the Latin Te Deum laudamus, which translates into “God, We Praise You,” and has been traced back to Niceta, the fourth-century Bishop of Romesiana in what is now Eastern Serbia. This particular Prelude, the first movement of a complete service, was composed by Marc- Antoine Charpentier at the end of the 17th century. Originally written for choir, soloists, and a Baroque orchestra, the music is often used for festive celebrations.
