Program Notes:
The study of the origins of “Sussex Carol” is a fascinating glimpse into the aural history of English folk music. This carol, like other folk music, was passed down from generation to generation, never being written down until the early twentieth century; the result being many different variations on text and melody. Ralph Vaughn Williams discovered the version used for this arrangement when he heard it being sung by Harriot Verrall of Horsham, Sussex. He wrote it down and later published it in 1919. The words to the first verse are as follows: On Christmas night all Christians sing To hear the news the angels bring. News of great joy, news of great mirth, News of our merciful King’s birth.
