One of most popular spirituals, “Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho” tells the Old Testament story of Joshua, Chapter 6: The walls of Jericho fell after, at God’s instruction, Joshua commanded his men to march around the city seven times playing brass instruments. As with many spirituals, the lyrics were synonymous with the struggle of slaves in the 19th century – themselves hoping that one day “the walls would come tumblin’ down.”
