The Christ Of Calvary
Grade Level 4
Year: 2013
Type: Bb/C Solo
Composer: James Curnow
Program Notes:
The beautiful folk song, Annie Laurie, is an old Scottish song based on a poem by William Douglas (1672–1748) of Dumfries and Galloway. The words were modified and the tune was added by Lady Jane Scott in 1834/5.
This setting of the melody, written in a theme and modified set of brief variations for any solo instrument, references the sacred text written by Nathan Atkinson Aldersley (1826-1899):
Of all in earth or Heaven, the dearest name to me
Is the matchless name of Jesus, The Christ of Calvary.
Chorus
The Christ of Calvary, the dearest name to me
Is the matchless name of Jesus, The Christ of Calvary.
An original theme based on motifs extracted from Annie Laurie opens the solo, which eventually evolves into three contrasting, brief variations…..fast, slow, fast. The entire melody only appears in the slower middle section between the faster variations.
