George Bennard (1873-1958), the son of a coal miner, moved as a child with his family to Lucas, Iowa, where he was converted in a Salvation Army meeting. After his marriage he served as a Salvation Army officer for several years, and then he became a renowned interdenominational evangelist, leading revival meetings in the United States and Canada.
He is remembered today as the author of over 300 songs, including the well-loved gospel song, "On a Hill Far Away Stood An Old Rugged Cross." The author said that the theme, "The Old Rugged Cross," and the melody came to him while he was leading evangelistic meetings. Written in 1913, it was first published in Heart and Life Songs in 1915.
