Program Notes:

Peter Scholtes wrote “They’ll Know We Are Christians” in 1965 while he was a Catholic priest serving in Chicago.  As a priest in the predominantly African-American St. Brendan’s Parish, he became involved in the American Civil Rights Movement. Even his own congregation was divided by racial struggles.  In the midst of this tumultuous time in his congregation, and the entire nation, Scholtes wrote these words:

We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord,

We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord,

And we pray that our unity will one day be restored,

And they'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love,

Yeah, they'll know we are Christians by our love.
