Peter Scholtes wrote “They’ll Know We Are Christians” in 1965 while he was a Catholic priest serving in Chicago.  As a priest in the predominantly African-American St. Brendan’s Parish, he became involved in the American Civil Rights Movement. Even his own congregation was divided by racial struggles.
