This Joyful Eastertide
Grade Level 2
Year: 2013
Type: Easter
Composer: James Curnow
Program Notes:
This beautiful Dutch melody (Vruechten, from David’s Psalmen, 1865) coupled with the uplifting text by George R. Woodward (1848-1934) is the basis for this joyful Easter setting that directs our thoughts to the risen Christ. The music is bold and stirring while the text is glorious. The fanfare at the opening, which re-occurs throughout the arrangement, heralds the joy that fills the heart of the Christian believer at the thought of our risen Christ.
There are two verses and refrains featured in this setting:
This joyful Eastertide, away with sin and sadness!
Our Lord, the crucified, has filled our hearts with gladness.
My being shall rejoice secure within God’s keeping,
Until the trumpet voice shall wake us from our sleeping.
Refrain:
Had Christ, who once was slain, not burst his three-day prison,
Our faith would be in vain.
But now has Christ arisen, arisen, arisen,
But now has Christ arisen!
