The text for this beautiful melody is based on the familiar passage in John 3:16: God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son. The melody was written by Sir John Stainer (1840-1901, English musicologist and composer) and is treated in this setting as a lyrical solo with ensemble accompaniment. Since the hymn tune and text are through composed (as opposed to strophic), the arrangement takes on the character of a text painting, with the soloist being featured in arching lines above the entire setting.
