Program Notes:

Although the author and composer were from different eras and places, the words and music were both inspired from pain and tragedy, giving testimony to God’s presence and strength even when things seem to be at their worst.

Annie Johnson Flint (1866-1932) lost both parents before she was six years old. As a teen she became afflicted with arthritis and soon thereafter was unable to walk. Even when the advance of the disease crippled her hands she continued to write many of her poems on the typewriter, using her knuckles.

It was seemingly by chance that when Hubert Mitchell (1907-1995) and his wife, Helen, made the decision to go as missionaries to Indonesia he happened to see Annie Johnson Flint’s poem on a wall plaque.

He giveth more grace when the burdens grow greater,

He sendeth more strength when the labors increase,

To added affliction He addeth His mercy,

To multiplied trials, His multiplied peace.

Its theme of promise and assurance inspired him to set it to music.  While they were serving in a very remote area of Sumatra, Helen died giving birth to their fourth child.  As Hubert walked through his personal “valley of the shadow of death” the truth of this song returned with its message of comfort and assurance.  It is no wonder these words continue to encourage generations to cling to their faith even in times of great challenge and pain.
