Psalm 130 is one of the psalms known as a ‘song of Ascents.’  It would have been sung by pilgrims climbing their way towards Jerusalem – a song for going to worship.  The verses of this late 19th century song (words by William T. Sleeper and music by George C. Stebbins) express thoughts inspired from the first verse of this Psalm, “Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord” (KJV). The text then develops the concept of traveling from an earth-bound situation into worship with the great God, who puts everything into perspective and brings healing and freedom.
