The King Of Love Solo Bb/C
Grade Level 3
Year: 2014
Type: Bb/C Solo
Composer: James Curnow
Program Notes:
Sir Henry Williams Baker was born in London, May 27, 1821, and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated, B.A. 1844, M.A. 1847. Taking Holy Orders in 1844, he became Vicar of Monkland, Herefordshire. Sir Henry's name is intimately associated with hymnody. One of his later songs based on the 23rd Psalm, “The King of Love, My Shepherd Is,” is here combined with the Irish Melody, St Columba.
The text and melody are interwoven in this setting as an instrumental solo, which features the interplay of the soloist and the accompaniment. The solo is intentionally not technically difficult, but strives to capture the beauty of the melodic contour of the Irish Folk Song as a tone solo.
