Program Notes:

“Vesper Hymn” was written by the leading Russian church composer of the late 18th century, Dimitri Bortniansky.  This hymn tune is the best-known of Bortniansky’s sacred works that were edited by Tchaikovsky and published in ten volumes.  The “Vesper Hymn” is most frequently associated with the words:

Hark! The vesper hymn is stealing

O’er the waters soft and clear;

Nearer yet and nearer pealing,

Soft it breaks upon the ear.

Jubilate! Jubilate! Jubilate! Amen.
