Program Notes:

At the beginning of the 19th century, there was a great revival in Kentucky, Tennessee, and the Carolinas, where a new spiritual began to be popularly sung.  It finally appeared in print as “The Wayfaring Stranger” in the Sacred Harp, a volume of shape-note tunes published in 1844.  This original horn solo uses the spiritual in its central section to showcase the warm and lyrical qualities of the instrument.
