Program Notes:
Wondrous Love" is a hymn that first appeared in the 1840 edition of The Southern Harmony, a collection of hymns written in the American shape-note tradition. Shaped-note writing (or fa-so-la) was a way of educating congregations that could not read music to sing in corporate worship. The original melody was written in the Dorian mode. The mode is much like the Aeolian (Natural minor) mode except that the sixth degree of the scale is raised a half step.
This arrangement seeks to describe the stanzas of this great hymn. The third stanza is embodied antiphonally in the last statement of the melody.
