Grade Level 1
Year: 2004
Type: Hymn/Song Arrangement
Composer: Robert Redhead
Program Notes:
While preparing for a communion service in 1707, Isaac Watts wrote this deep expression of gratitude for the amazing love revealed by Christ’s death of on the cross. The hymn is remarkable, not just because of its depth of meaning, but for its intensely personal expression. At the time of writing, such intimate applications of encounters with the Gospel were not normally expressed. Almost all congregational singing at that time consisted of ponderous repetitions of the Psalms. Isaac Watts’ unique expression made an enormous impact, and it is not surprising that it has often been acclaimed as the greatest hymn in the English language.
The tune “Hamburg,” which is based on Gregorian Chant, is used twice, expressing verse 1 in a contemplative manner and verse 4 as a strong confident statement of full commitment by the Christian who recognizes how amazing and compelling is the love of Christ.
