In 1890, Salvation Army officer, Ernest Blandy, wrote the words to this song after electing to serve at a church in the New York City waterfront slum known as "Hell's Kitchen" rather than at another post that was well-established and much more comfortable. The song is based on Mark 8:34 and has endured as a well-known prayer chorus within the church.
